Earlier this month, when I was in Raleigh, NC for the Creative at Heart Conference, I extended my trip for a day to see my older sister in Chapel Hill. This was my first time in Chapel Hill and it’s one of my new favorite places!
Sarah is a PhD student in the Department of Geography at UNC-Chapel Hill and her research examines the strong coupling between hydrology and ecology in tropical islands. She has lived and studied all over the world. Most of her time overseas has been conducting research in the Galapagos Islands and Ascension Island. She is funded by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, the Geological Society of America, and National Geographic’s Young Explorers Program. Basically, she is brilliant and she is going to save the world one day. I am so proud of everything she has accomplished in her 3 years at UNC and I can’t wait for her to officially become DOCTOR Schmitt in May 2019!
During our time together I took some headshots of Sarah around campus. I hope you enjoy some of my favorites!
If you’ve never been to Chapel Hill, North Carolina you need to plan a trip as soon as possible. It’s the cutest town with so much character and the people are sweeter than their tea. I felt so at home and I honestly never wanted to leave. Nothing could beat my 24 hours exploring this special little town with my “big sissy”.
You’re amazing Sarah, and you’re truly are an incredible role model for young women in science.
